Historic Hood River
Recognize Anyone?

Notes
An HHR reader is looking for help with this 1947 image of the 2nd grade at Coe Elementary school. The teacher is his great grandmother, Elva Whealdon Bryant. We’re wondering if any of you recognize any of the students, or if any of you remember being in a class taught by Elva Whealdon Bryant. Apparently this was her last year teaching at Hood River.
[ed. note: updated to correct from Pine Grove to Coe school]

Not sure, but I think this is Mrs. Bryant who was my 2nd grade teacher at Coe Primary in the 1947-48 school year and I think I recognize some of the students who may have been 2nd graders the following year. She was a wonderful teacher and I even stopped to visit her in Brownsville traveling home from the UO many years later.

Pretty sure that isn't Pine Grove. If that's the front door, the slope is going the wrong direction and the building doesn't have exposed brick.
Norma
I have a picture of my second grade class ('48-'49) that was taken on the same steps at Coe Primary school. Mrs. Frick was the Principal and our second grade teacher. This picture would have been of the class a year ahead of me. I think I recognize only two students in this picture.
Norma
JKG: That is the west entrance to the school.

Senior brain. I missed 1st grade because of moves at end of WWII so was in 2nd grade in 1946-47; therefore, date is correct in Arthur's caption. Norma, do you recognize Pat Smith, Barbara Parsons or Dennis Paddock?
Jeff Bryant
Thanks for the comments so far. I know she also taught at Pine Grove. It looks like a pretty big class of 2nd graders to handle alone. The kid on the right end looks like he is full of mischief.

seventh in from the left looks iike Bill Frick….agree that this is Coe….way toooo large a class for pine grove. I think Dennis is like the fourth in from the right.
Norma and I have similar pictures of our class. Mrs. Frick was one hell of a lady.
Norma
Barbara Parsons and Pat Smith are the two I recognized. The girl two persons to the right of Pat looks familiar but can't put a name to her.
Gaylord Durland
Can't be us. We were much better looking! :o))
Norma
There must have been three 2nd grade classes. Didn't Pansy Diskin (sp) teach a 2nd grade class? We always had three classes of about 25 students each until we got to May Street School. By the time our class graduated in 1959 we were down to 46 students actually graduating.
Arlen L Sheldrake
I think the Dennis is the third from the right on the front step. Norma, that teacher name is familiar and thanks for sending your brother my way.
Gaylord……we can always wish…. I forgot to mention that Bill Frick is the son of our elementary school principal Mrs. Frick Lived on Prospect…..
Jeffrey W Bryant
Again, thanks for the comments. I'm glad Mrs. Bryant is remembered fondly. The 1950 School Census includes Barbara Parsons, Pat Smith, Dennis Paddock and Bill Frick being born in 1940 and living in District 3, so it is for sure the Coe school. I could list others born in 1940, but there was apparently more than one class.
Barbara Parsons
Heres my best memory. Front row Donald Caldwell,TomParker, u`nknown,Lorraine Bruns,Virginia Lee, SteveWilcox,Bill Frick,Mary Dell Bryant whoWas Mrs. Bryants granddaughter, Pat Smith, Joy Paasch, Gail Wygandt, Dennis Paddock, maybe Billy Bryant another grandchild of the teacher, Eddie Holloway, seated Be

Shoot. Hit the wrong key and had to send before I was done with row one. Seated girl Beverly Ambrose.
On to row two…cant identify girl in plaid dress next to Steve Butterfield. Or thbe boy next to her. Then Mickey Cunninh,Betty Gadway, unknown, Freddy Forbes,Tom Barney,Cant identify girl with side part or grimacing boy in plaid. Boy behind Dennis Paddock might be Tommy Downing. Girl behind Eddie Holloway is Kathy DeShirley. Cant identify two boys on the end.
Barbara Parsons
Row three…girl with short blonde curls could be Judy Kramer.Dont know boy next to her.then myself, Barbara Parsons, looking like the wrath of god in ringlets and ribbons. Then Mrs. Bryant. Cant identify boy next fto her. Tall boy in glasses could either be Charles Sheppard or Mike Oxborrow.
Jeff Bryant
Thank you Barbara Parsons for identifying the students. I think you are right about Billy Bryant, my uncle. But he is the only grandchild of Mrs. Bryant in the picture.
Dennis
Bill,
Thank you for sending me the Historic Hood River. I look at all these young faces and realize they have their whole future ahead. Humbling!
Barbara,
Great job at recalling all the faces.
