With today’s artifact Grace reminds us of the days when displaying a fine piece of imported porcelain was an important signal of wealth and style. I remember when “the good China” would come out for an important dinner which was served in the dining room which was used as infrequently as the fancy dinnerware:
This pitcher was manufactured by the English pottery company Powell Bishop & Stonier and dates between 1880 and 1891, making it a product of Victorian England. It features a convolvulus, or morning glory, transfer design that has been hand colored. While little is known about the pitcher’s journey to Oregon, we know that it has been a part of the museum collection for a long time and was accessioned in 1949 when the first Hood River Historical Society county museum was established. We can see the pitcher on display in the top right of this image of the first museum from that same year.

That’s a beautiful pitcher. I have a little syrup pitcher of my Great Grandmother’s, similar in design.
