A Historic Hood River reader has submitted this artifact for our Monday enjoyment. It is a postcard sent by the Broughton Mill to alert viewers to the upcoming episode of the “Lassie” television show featuring the Broughton flume. This was during the era when you had to be sitting in front of your television at a specific time to see a show.
If the reader is old enough and watched early television programs, you may have remembered the weekly “Lassie” series. During 1967, season 14, episode 11, Lassie was injured in a lumber mill accident and had no way but one to get to a veterinarian. That single means was to take the Broughton Lumber flume boat from the saw mill to the finishing mill on the Columbia River. A number of TV minutes were used to show Lassie and her human owner racing down the mountain side in a flume boat.

I think my fifth grade teacher was more excited to show my class this episode than my class was.
Then the field trip to mill A&B.
Great memories of that trip and the flume in action before it closed.

I loved Lassie. We had Collie dogs on our farm, but not as beautiful or smart as Lassie.
We got our first TV in 1957, so I was an early watcher.
Now, when I watch an old clip, I think, “boy, that is kind of corny”.
I think you can still see a bit of the flume up above Tunnel #5.
