Here’s another view of that “head-end” collision near Roseburg. Earl Conser has written numbers on the locomotives so you can tell them apart. We first saw this accident in this image.
I wonder if that’s Earl Conser’s fingerprint on the image right above the “1”?

Invariably, when I see photos of any train wreck, the first thing my brain coughs up is "god, what a mess."

In the picture above, the two locomotives appear to be nose-to-nose. In the earlier picture, there appears to be some distance between the two locomotives. Did they pull them apart? Or is there some optical illusion going on here?

Good point kmb, Something has definitely moved between these pictures.

As the one newspaper article says:
"The scene of the wreck defies adequate description."
It also says that at the inquest investigation, conductor Cloyd according to his own testimony, mistook Thursday for Wednesday."
I can’t imagine surviving this wreck.
