Historic Hood River
Driving to Cloud Cap
4-5-2018

Notes
Improvements to the road and more advanced automobiles made it much easier to get to Cloud Cap Inn, though even today it is something of an adventure. Notes on the photo say “circa 1928?” though I am very suspicious of that date. The auto is much earlier. I suspect it is the Cadillac which made the 1905 first automobile ascent to Cloud Cap Inn.

Arthur, I agree that the car looks like a Cadillac and most likely is the Model B,
made in 1904-05.

That is one tall flag pole, took some real climbing to get that up there ~

This is a 1907 Cadillac driven by a Mr. Covey of Portland, the car was called The Cadillac Cloud Cap Climber. According to an ad in the Oregonian, it made it to 7,000 ft., Cloud Cap is at approx. 6,000 ft. but Mr. Covey was a car salesman.

Thanks Ron. Did you mean 1905, as described in the linked 1911 article, or do you have some more authoritative information? I know you have your sources!

Is there a rock ridge that the photographer is standing on?
Ron Kikel
Covey and Wallace have an add dated 1907, I superimposed a 1907 Cad with the one in the photo and they match, since I began researching Cloud Cap I found a lot of dates that don’t match up but that’s history.

WOW, father John L, born near the community of Mt. Hood, told lots of stories about this road….most I have forgotten. while this photo is a few years before his birth, not many.
