This Alva Day view of the Cooper Spur Shelter was captured at 4:20 AM on the morning of the Legion Climb. The shelter sign says “Elevation 7100 Feet”. I believe the shelter is still there. Have any of you had to seek emergency shelter there?

No, but it's a stunning destination with fairly minimal effort, since you start so high from Cloud Cap trailhead. If you continue to follow the Cooper Spur ridge on the left side of the photo to the first solid snowfield, you are near “Tie-in Rock,” which is the highest you can hike on Hood w/o technical equipment, I believe 8500'.

I meant no to seeking shelter, but yes, the shelter is still there.

Did it have a roof?
Somebody new what they were doing when they started stacking those rocks.

I have spent three nights there, over the years. Early '80's, late 80's, and maybe early 90's…. But not for emergency shelter. Two of the nights were for an early start for climbing the mountain. Cooper Spur route, and the Sunshine route. Once I stayed in the a neighboring stone shelter(CCC also) just out and above Cairn Basin. About 5 of my fellow Crag Rats were on a search, and we took cover and spent the night, resuming the search in the morn…! Remember that Nike executive that disappeared on the mountain, maybe mid to late '80's….
