Notes
A wonderful new collection of images by Joe Kollas and Alan Winans arrived at the museum last week. When I get a box full of negatives I always grab one to scan so I have some feeling for the quality of the material. If this is at all representative, we’re in for a treat!
This one is by Alan Winans. I’m told most of the material is from Wyeast High School. You probably don’t need me to tell you this is dated to the early 1950s. Anyone care to identify these young ladies?

Fairly certain this was taken at Pop’s Place on the west end of town.
I do know that on the far left that is Dolly (Fenwick) Rasmussen. The one on the far right is Ivonne (Baker) Delephine.
The others look familiar but can’t put a name to them yet….

bet departed brother John W. (Wy’East class of 1955) would know as he would both photographer names. spent many hours at Pop’s Place.

The girl next to Dollie is Carol Jensen and the one in the white blouse is Sharon Hathorn. These girls were all in Wy’east class of 1954.

Can someone fill us in on "Pop’s Place?" Where was it located? When was it around? What sort of place was it?

Between Sharon and Vonnie sits Marjorie McClain. Pop’s Place was on the south side of Cascade, about directly across from the State gravel storage and licens exam station.

Wheels up! I assume that Marjorie married, but i don’t know her current name. Haven’t seen her since 1954.

Just occurred to me– Sharon Hathorn married Carl Wilson, and they stayed together for life.

greasy spoon……the Hood River version of a drive in eatery except no car service…..noted as a hang out, NOT for good food (in my less than perfect memory)…..the other was the Y Inn, at the other end of town…… of course growing up I wouldn’t know fine dinning as we couldn’t afford such……

Arlen, moving to Hood River from Siletz-the rez-I thought "Pop’s Place was a wonderful establishment for the kids to meet up and enjoy fine dining.

Now we have Andy’s Y-Inn. How many of you boys got thrown out of there? I know a whole bunch of them……….. Remember Andy sitting up there at the bar glaring at teen agers? He didn’t like them, but sure wasn’t above taking their money and they spent a lot of it there. Ofcourse, Pop’s Place had long disappeared by then.
Those were the only two places that high schoolers really hung out. If you went to The Dalles it was The Hand Out and that was a very popular busy place….Fine dining usually meant a coke and french fries……..

Hey Buzz, Bill and Arlen………Wasn’t there an eatery called "Dragonette" up by the high school there, just to the east. Dr. Wells at one time had his office in that building. Did high schoolers hang out there?

I think you are right Charlott although it is fuzzy….I think it was run by Jerry Carson’s dad but they moved before Jerry spent much if any time in high school…he is still on my HRHS class of ’59 mailing roster but I haven’t heard much from him.

Arthur, yes, that was/is the location. back before the freeway, a LOT of traffic at the convergence of 35 and 30.

The library had to finally put the year books under lock & key. People were cutting pictures out of them. You can still view them all, but have to get the librarian to get them out for you.

Ivone was my wife. Her first name was Ivone "actually middle name"
Thus the nickname Vonnie. Her last name was Delepine "no h"
My wife pasted away August 4th 2013. She is at the right side
of the picture.

Carol Jensen, my sister, is married to Clyde Kirby. They have been
happily married for 62 years & lived in Hood River their whole lives!!
