This is another Alan Winans image, probably of the homecoming queen at Wyeast High School from the early 1950s. Can anyone identify her?

Of course I can…….A very very dear friend who I went through years of school . with. We didn’t start school at Pine Grove together, and can’t remember when her family came to Pine Grove or from where. From then on went all through school together. Such a sweet neat person is Darlene Millikan. She was very out going with that great big smile and very popular. She was a cheer leader at least her junior and senior year of high school.
This is definitely Wy’east Homecoming and without looking things up my guess this is homecoming in the fall of 1959, our senior year. We definitely did not go to Wy’east in the early 1950’s as the first year of the "great" school was in 1952. "Go Tuffy"……….
She now lives in the New Orleans area and I think she does or did sell real estate. Her father Cecil Millikan was for a period of time a Pine Grove school bus driver…

ok for you Charlott…..bringing up the great high school battles of the 1950s…a classic split between the "city" and "country" folk……the history of why the county pulled out of HRHS was I think painful for some folk. I always thought brother John’s decision to head off to Wy’East his freshman year (the first class to go 4 years at Wy’East) was interesting and now wish I had asked him more about why he did that move….me, I stayed a "blue dragon"….

These last two images look like scenes from "Happy Days" – I’d expect to see Ron Howard, Pottsy, and others show up. I graduated from Jefferson High in Portland in 1957, and we of course had a number of hang-out places, such as Jim Dandy’s, Yaw’s Top-notch and others. Sure brings back the memories – just had our 60th anniversy reunion, over 50 people, a picnic at Oaks Park.

The reason they had grass on the football field at Wy’east was so the cheerleaders had someplace to graze during halftime. Calm down–just a joke.

Since this is a history website I’ll note that Buzz is highlighting the rivalry between the two high schools in the valley by channeling the voice of a 17 year-old male in the 1950s.

Oh boy, seems I recall a very, very cold November night and one Jefferson football team. Yes, guys, we know, they won………..but for Wy’east to go up against them was something in itself. Hosford said if he had of had the cream of the crop from both Hood River and Wy’east they could have whipped anything the state of Oregon had to offer in the way of a football team. I had a husband who fully agreed with that statement.

Arthur: If you wish to have some more history about this, Buzz liked those Wy’east girls……….Probably even the ones he called "cows."
