This wonderful portrait of “Viola” at Cascade Locks is from the Lee Family folder in the museum files.
There was a Viola Beatrice Gorton, born 1874, who married Peter Joseph Lee of Cascade Locks. I’m guessing this is her. But do you think she is somehow related to the Grateful Dead song “Viola Lee Blues,” originally by Noah Lewis?

She arrived in Oregon from Ohio. Her father was James Lloyd Gorton who at the time of his death was the commander of Canby Post of the GAR in Hood River. She first married, in 1892 to Henry Gras, who had changed him name to Gray and lived in Wyeth. Henry died and is buried in the little wildwood cemetery at Wyeth. She then married Peter Joseph Lee and lived her life out in Cascade Locks.
Her sister was Phoebe Gorton who was married to Earl Koberg. She had a brother William who drown in the Deschutes River.
