Historic Hood River

“Rural electrification” was perhaps the most prominent infrastructure project in the US in the first half of the twentieth century.  Locally, we know men like Max Moore and then Alva Day worked to string electric lines to remote corners of the Hood River Valley, and this older Alva Day image hints at the difficulty of those efforts.

After more than a decade I’m still “discovering” new treasures in our collection of 2500 Alva Day negatives.  This one was poorly exposed so easy to skip over, but every year our digital tools get better and make it easier to coax a very readable image from a faded or poorly exposed source.  In this case just dragging the “dehaze” slider brought into view a rich image which showcases Alva Day’s skill at capturing his workers doing their job in our beautiful valley.
