Historic Hood River
Wyeast Cafeteria?
10-30-2017

Notes
I suspect this is a special event since everyone is wearing name tags. Unfotunately the tags aren’t legible, but there are two guys who have names embroidered on their shoulders. Gary and John are facing us from the middle of the closest table we can see clearly.
Alan Winans photo from Wyeast High School, 1950s.

I am baffled on this one. Definitely Wy’eat cafeteria, but what year and what event I haven’t a clue. I don’t see anybody that is familiar at all. Definitely some sort of special occasion as you can see a head table to the right. I don’t think the guys in the letter mens sweaters are from Wy’east either.
I would guess maybe that Wy’east was hosting something or other, as the black guy throws me. No African Americans at Wy’east until well after my school days.
I will comment on the paintings. I am not 100% positive, too many years ago, but I think those were by Percy Manser. Wonder what ever happened to them. My guess and only a guess was they were destroyed when the roof collapsed after that snow and ice storm….Sad….
I would love to have someone figure this out….

Surprised to hear that Wy’east had a cafeteria. None at HRHS-we brown bagged it. Does anybody know what they charged for lunch?

Great picture of the prairie schooner on the wall although few of these saw mountains. Most on the overland trips were farm wagons converted and covered for travel.

Suits, ties, place mats, not the.35 cent meals I remember in another school although home lunches were more the norm.

I don’t recall the prices. I remember Friday was always fish or hamburger day. You generally bought a card for x amount of $’s for x amount of meals. I think you could buy lunch daily. You could also take your own lunch if so inclined. Generally a big turn out for hamburgers.
This photo is definitely an event, not an every day Wy’east lunch.

I see Argyle socks and Peter Pan collars, so my guess in the 1950’s.

There is Percy Manser painting in the Hood River Valley High School library just like these.Did they move them to the new high school.

Could it be a Christmas Banquet?
I saw some photos online of the Wy’east Christmas Banquet and the table seating looked similar to this photo.
Charlott
This somewhat prior to 1956. if Alan Winans was the photographer.
Jill Stanford
L.E. might be right – hard to see it, but I think there is a red candle as a centerpiece or table decoration on one of the tables.

i forwarded this to a member of Wyeast’s class of 1959. He guessed the photo was taken in 1957.
