This one is also a bit far afield, but Hood River residents of this era would occassionally visit the big city for business or pleasure. This is the view which would greet them. I see street cars, horse drawn carriages, and a strange tracked vehicle.

I think the building on the right is the Spaulding Building and to the left, across the street, is the Dekum Building. Boy, I'd would hate using the fire escape from the top floors of the Spaulding Bldg.
The building down the road on the right, with the triangular corner roof, was the Perkins Hotel used by business men from Hood River people in the early 1900's. The Imperial Hotel further up the street was a destination spot for many Hood Riverites as well. There were many hotels in Portland to suit your pocket book in those days. You could get a room for $1.00 to $3.00 a day in those early years. You could get your name in The Oregonian just by staying in certain hotels.
