It may seem like an odd choice given current affairs, but I promise this cruise will be both safe and good entertainment.
A year after taking a road trip through Oregon and Washington, Olga Plog headed up to Alaska on this cruise ship. This postcard is glued into her scrapbook next to a first class ticket. This was eight years after Alva Day took his trip to Alaska, so I’ll bet they compared notes.
I believe the allure of a trip to Alaska was a natural response to all the coverage of the Klondike gold rush 25 years earlier. Both Alva Day and Olga Plog certainly heard stories of the Klondike when they were young, perhaps even first hand accounts. Olga got to visit all the key spots she would have read about, though in considerably greater comfort.
Olga took some great photos, and I’ve had a good time researching them. I hope you enjoy this little escape from Hood River. Here’s the itinerary for this ship.

The Admiral Rogers was one of the many ships that was owned and operated by the Pacific Steampship Company. This ship traveled from Seattle to Ketchikan, with numerous ports of call in between. This particular ship made this trip regularly from May until September. The company had many ships going as far south as San Diego.

“cruise” to Kalama……….

Pretty much the same itinerary as when I took an Alaska cruise a few years ago. Olga left Seattle in the morning. I left late afternoon, so by the time we cruised past Port Angeles it was dark. As we left the Straits and entered open water the boat started rocking and the clothes hangers in the closet started banging. I worried it was going to be a rough trip, but I bet like Olga, we had a great cruise.
