Historic Hood River
Third and Oak

Notes
We can have a little fun with this more recent image of Third and Oak. First question: Can you date it? The jewelry store is named “Tyack Jewelers” in this era. There is a book store at the present location of Waucoma Books, and a Stationery reflected in the window from the current location of Hood River Stationers. The VW Beetle down the street doesn’t help too much.
It also looks like the subterranean location beneath the jewelers has a restaurant in it. How many different restaurants can you name that have shared that location? I have fond memories of several of them from my brief tenure here.
Norma
The original restaurant was Chugs started by Charlie “Larry” Miller and Doug Flint in the 60s. I went to high school with Larry and he was in the Naval Air with my husband. That is how I met my husband.

No clue on the date. But the two cars, and certain other details such as the parking meters and crosswalk markers, make it much more recent than I would have otherwise thought at first glance, based on a black and white photo.

Back in the 1940's and 50's, we called the shop on that corner, Finney's. I can't remember what kind of a business Mr. Finney ran there. Mrs. Finney, his wife, was the principal of Park Street School when I was in the 3rd grade in 1949.
Harold
Is the other car a mid-sixties Mustang?
ArthurB
The other car looks more like a Ford Fairlane to me. Definitely not a Mustang.
Judy
The building behind the jewelers is Scott Insurance which was in there from 1947 to 1988 at least.

The building behind the jewelers was Bart Dobson's print shop in the late 40s' and sometime into early 50's. Restaurant space underneath was where Boris Sirpo had rehearsals and gave lessons. Norma, was this the same Larry Miller who later had photo store across from present jewelry store? When was the Elks building built?
Marilyn
My best guess would be the 70's, a time when you could actually shop for just about anything you needed.
Norma
cg: Yes, Same Larry Miller. Just talked to him lately. He is in Gladstone now.
Norma
As for the Elks Club it would have been before 1955. We used to pick up my dad from work and stop at the Elks on the way home. We kids would watch TV as we did not have one at home yet!
Melody Shellman
My guess is 1980s.
kmb
I would say it has to be 1970's or later. Melody could be right, early to mid-1980's. I distinctly remember driving through downtown HR in the early 1980's on an early Sunday evening and the place was totally dead and empty. Kind of like the picture.

The car on the left looks to me more like a '65 Plymouth sport and the VW is post '58 with the larger back window……it's possible to be a '62 with the larger back end.
