Historic Hood River
The Jitney
5-26-2022

Notes
Over the years “The Jitney” which provided passenger service on the Mt. Hood Railroad took different forms. This version looks like the same car as this one, but with a different power source. This looks similar to a Model T engine compartment to me, though it may be a little too long.

Arthur, it sure does look like the same running gear and most likely a 6 cylinder engine is under the "bonnet".

I am trying to figure out the context of this image. The wheels are on 4 x 4’s with blocking under the timbers and an odd block under the rear wheel. Are they moving it from a stern wheeler to the rails. It also looks like the white background has been manipulated or the image cut out for publication. The demarcation line between the messy ground and the white background looks too sharp to be natural especially around the far rear wheel where the timber appears to be cropped.

any info on location of this photo or why the Museum has it? appears to be a classic railroad builders photo. interesting that this jitney had removable windows.

I agree the photo looks like it has been masked– probably for newspaper publication. There were many modifications made to this car over the years, but I think this may have been the first version. One of the changes was to shift the passenger compartment forward on the undercarriage. This setup doesn’t look very stable!
