Historic Hood River
The Heights Cubs
3-9-2020

Notes
Meet the Heights Cubs, parading down Oak Street in one of the “Pet Parades” from the early 1930s.
This is also a good view of some of the important merchants of the era: Hackett Furniture, the Apple Blossom Cafe, Keirs Drugs, and I believe that’s Hood River Meats next door to the Smith Building.

I wonder what the signs are that the little girls are holding?
There was Chicago Cubs player Bobby Gene Smith who lived in Hood River but he was born in 1934 so probably not a part of this team.

Yes, Bobby Gene Smith was a pro baseball player. Had a long career, playing for the Cardinals, the Phillies, Mets, Cubs and ending up with the Angels. His last year of playing was in 1965. His father was Henry Smith and they lived out somewhere in the Barrett area. His father worked at one of the local cold storages.

Where it says "meats", that could be Doc Eby’s grocery store. I don’t know the years he had it, but do know it was there in the late 40’s.

I tried to tease out some detail from those girls’ signs, but little luck. One of them looks like it might be a cartoon, or it could just be random pixels.
The ball players sweatshirts all have some design or text, but it just looks like random symbols to me.
I like the clown carrying the lard can.
