Historic Hood River
Strawberry House
1-23-2019

Notes
This image from a Davidson descendant is labelled “Strawberry House.” Not quite as fancy as the apple packing houses we have seen, but I suppose it provided temporary storage during the strawberry harvest. Strawberries were an early “cash crop” in Hood River as the could reach the Portland market by river steamer while they were still fresh.

Not a very happy looking crew. Is that a flume in the distance on the right hand side?
Arthur
Good catch, Marilyn. That’s definitely a flume running through the field parallel with a drainage. I can’t tell if it’s a lumber flume or irrigation.
Ben
Anyone know where this is? West side somewhere?

I think some of us have agreed here previously, that we are not fond of picking strawberries, especially in the hot sun.
Looking at those women in their heavy dresses, makes me think bleh!
I assume that is an irrigation flume they are sitting on?

picking strawberrys as a kid taught be a HIGHLY valuable lesson….stoop labor was NOT my calling….so I agree will all the folk pictured

I am guessing these people don’t head for the CrossFit gym when they get off work.
