Historic Hood River
Out For Some Air

Notes
This image probably from Joe Young was in a sleeve dated 1939. We previously saw another image from the same shoot, but it’s been long enough and this is a nice view too.
The City Hall building was originally constructed in 1920 to house all city functions including the fire and police departments. I believe the fire station was here until the 1970s when a new station was constructed on Meyer Parkway. I’m sure someone will correct me if I got the chronology wrong.

I have fond memories of the siren sounding and one of these trucks grinding up Oak Street picking up store workers on the way to a fire…"¦"¦.and while living on Prospect hearing the nearby siren go off at noon each day. Father John L spent a lot of time as a volunteer in this station and at West Side.
Jim Mason
I always enjoy the lit gargoyles of this building.

They still have the center LaFrance fire truck. The front one looks to be about 1938 Ford.

Another view of the HRFD when it was a part of City Hall. It remained that up into the early 1960’s when I left HR to join the Marine Corps.

The Hood River Volunteer Fire Department got a new fire truck in June 1923.
