This was a unusual storm for the western states of Idaho,Utah, California, and other western states April 20, 21 and 23rd. It was a dust storm of enormous size stretching from Spokane to 600 miles off the Oregon coast. Visibility was reduced enough that cars had to stop along the road. In Portland, The Dalles, White Salmon and Hood River dust entered the houses coating house interior with a fine film of soil. Telephone service was disrupted, electrical wires were blown down and telegraph service was damaged. Mail planes between Seattle and Portland were disoriented and landed in small airports until the storm had passed. A huge amount of timber was lost in the Cascade range, blocking highways destroying or damaging summer homes. Numerous forest fires raged the county side. The Hood River State trout hatchery suffered a wrecked flume, blocked roads, and generally mussed up the place said Matt Ryckman, superintendent of hatcheries of the state game commission.

Any other information about location?
First time I've seen a man of that era who has a bit of a belly. Definitely not a normal woodsman – they are always lean.

Can anyone identify the tree in the foreground by it's bark?

May need more than axes for this one.

Boy, that must have been a storm. Thanks for the info LMH. I was recently reading about the windstorm of January 1880 which also destroyed a large amount of timber, which then perhaps contributed to the later Yacolt Burn.
