Historic Hood River
“Roaching” a deck frame
9-12-2023

Notes
I’ve never heard the term “roaching” before, but as the caption explains Mark and his son Ralph Nichols are using a clever machine to “roach” the steel stock to make a curved deck frame. This looks like the early Nichols Boat Works on the west side of what we now call Nichols Basin, before it moved to the south edge.
I can’t find other uses of the term “roaching” which makes me wonder if it was localized to this boat works?

Arthur, it’s possibly coined from “roll your own roach”.
