Notes

This Ezra Meeker postcard shows the Oregon Trail about 50 years after the wagons stopped cutting grooves in the trail, the trail was still very recognizable. The parts of the trail I’ve seen in the Blue Mountains are far less distinct now.

Imagine that trail after an inch of rain…
    Very young forest.

When I was a sophomore at Hood River High School, I took Driver Training from Ocean Beach Patton. One time he had us take the old highway from Mosier to The Dalles. And near Rowena, he pointed out some ruts along side the road and told us that that was part of the Oregon Trail.

By the way, Beach Patton, as they called him, was a long-time, very dedicated teacher at HRHS.

I think you're correct, nels– Emigrant Springs State Park. I've stopped there a few times but I don't recall any tracks this distinct.

You can see the Oregon Trail from the air even in places where crops are planted. There is a wonderful book, “The Oregon Trail Revisited” that traces the trail from beginning to end. Particularly in Wyoming there are a number of places where it's still visible.

bet there were many places like this where tipping over was a possibility and family was deployed with a rope(s) uphill to steady the wagon……

sure see why wheel width was part of a toll road fee………..

    great photo!!! good old days…….NOT

My earlier trail guides, Bob and Bertha Reynolds have great material on the trail in the Blues, their previous home, and Wyoming their present home.
