I know the steamships were slow, noisy, and crowded, but it always looks like the passengers are embarking on an adventure. I’m guessing some of those kids are on their first trip this far from home. Check out the jalopy on the lower deck. It looks like an older Model T, and seems to have a pennant which says “Vancouver Wash”.

My late mother in law had fond memories of taking the Bailey Gatzert to Portland and back with her sister and their parents. And yes, it sounded like it was always an adventure.

The Bailey Gatzert, named for a Seattle mayor, ran on the Columbia from 1892 to 1917. During the Lewis and Clark Expo, it made two runs daily from Portland to Cascade Locks. (Information from The Columbia River Images)
