Next Stop, Winans

Notes

I got an unexpected treat when I zoomed in to look at the detail of the Laraway plate. That building is the Mt. Hood Railroad depot at Winans, which was just a short distance north of Dee on the east side of the Hood River. We knew the depot existed because it was listed on the Mt. Hood Railroad timetables, but I think this is the first image of it we’ve seen.

GREAT photo Arthur….you got my attention with this….. I will suggest to Scott if he isn’t already, to take a look at this photo of his railroad’s history. Someday I hope MHRR gets back to running south of the Odell reload.

Very cool! We are looking east, Gilhooley/Middle Mt in background.
Since1957 I have been a passenger but mostly a driver on the Dee Hwy- my preferred road to the city, Hood River. There were several old, abandoned, falling down buildings on either side of the DeeHwy at that wide spot just North of Iowa Dr.- I remember the one on the west side was built with cedar planks on the outside and the cedar bark was still on it. Winans corner was intriguing to me.
And there was the big house on the inside corner that was finally removed not all that long ago"¦

There was a washout that left track dangling after the line was bought by a Texas
group. Was that ever repaired or is it still dangling?

The washout was all the way down towards the end of the line at Hood River. It was repaired– I think there was some FEMA money but maybe someone else knows the details.

The nearby Punch Bowl service station was started by Paul and Lynn Winans in 1924.
