Historic Hood River
Multnomah Falls, 1902
2-22-2018

Notes
Here’s A.J. Fletcher’s 1902 view of Multnomah Falls, before any highways, before the lodge, before the Benson Bridge. The railroad and the telegraph lines make it clear this isn’t wilderness, but it’s quite a different sight today.

Hopefully what appears to be a barrel in the creek wasn’t someone’s ill fated attempt to ride the falls…

This RR trestle was on the location of the present 1915 highway bridge.. The RR was straightened through here with the present steel bridge with the 1907 date on it..

Ok. Can someone refresh my memory.
Will the Lodge be built in front of the railroad trestle?
Arthur
I think the Columbia River Highway bridge replaced this trestle, and the lodge was constructed just to the SW of the bridge.

Wondered about people on the trestle but see on other photos the passenger platform extended out onto the trestle. The original waiting station where the lodge now exists was moved out to the new RR grade on fill that is now parking lot..

Surprised he 1882 log bridge at the falls does not show here, I see it in other photos including the Villard Golden Spike Excursion photo ~

What explains the peculiar shape pf this photo?
