I recently rediscovered this charming handmade album in our collection. My feelings of deja vu led me back to this earlier album by “A.J. Fletcher” of his visit to “Wild West Camp” at Lost Lake in 1902. The very distinctive handwriting and the way the ribbon was tied was very similar. Sure enough there is a small notation “A.J. Fletcher Photos” beneath the sailboat image.
The Columbia certainly was a different place before any dams or highways were built. I believe Mr. Fletcher was traveling by steamer making frequent stops, and I’ll share some more of his views.
I’m not sure who Mr. (or Ms?) Fletcher was, but there was an “Allison Fletcher” (he went by “Allie”) born in 1868 who lived his later life in Odell. I can’t find any record of a middle initial for him, but these albums seemed to be in our records associated with his family. I believe he moved from the Portland area to Odell sometime after 1902, which could be consistent with his authorship of these fun albums.

Allison Fletcher came to H. R. from Illinois, via Portland. and was am prcjardost in the area of Odell. He was the father of Bob, Loren and Art Fletcher.

I can remember trying to make a connection to the homesteading Fletcher family that I knew of in the Vancouver Clark County area, and an A.J. Fletcher photographer.

I remember Loren. He & his wife were great dancers & not only taught locals, but worked on cruise ships also.

A.J. Fletcher must have still been living in Clark County, WA. in 1910.
This photo of the Russell School was taken by him. The school was a few miles east of Vancouver.

I think it’s the Bailey Gatzert. I don’t think any of the other steamers had as much structure on the third level.
