Here’s the mouth of the Little White Salmon River, pre-dam. It’s late October, so the Columbia is especially low.

Ohhh, I want a large framed one of this!!
Pretty hard to tow a raft of logs out of there.
The road from Chenowith comes down the bluff right below us. To our left right below us was a store that the 1894 flood took out.
Billy Drano had a farm here. When they finally put a road up the Washington side of the Columbia, it turned here at the west side of the Little WS, went up the hill and came back down at Underwood.
Later they put in the tunnels.

My husbands family, who lived along the Columbia always said October was the lowest river level.
You can see from this photo the sand stretches clear out into the main river. With today’s dams, river levels aren’t as noticeable.
The Columbia river dams provide power, flood control, and irrigation, but through the Gorge they provide year round river navigation.
Buzz
Climbing Mt. Hood and swimming acrossing the Columbia were two things I had to do in high school. Looks like swimming the Columbia in Oct. would have been a better time than early summer.
