Here’s a nice 1931 image of the Knights of Pythias band. Now that we have the entire Alva Day collection scanned and tagged with dates, I can quickly cross reference this image with several others taken the same day. The band was playing at a racetrack, maybe in Salem or Portland. Day didn’t spend too much time there, because two weeks later he was hunting in eastern Oregon, where he met a porcupine.
I suspect Alva Day would have been right at home with Facebook. With 2500 images, we have a remarkable chronology of his travels.

A thanks to you and your crew Arthur. We would have never known Alva Day or the area as we do now.
I have loved many of his photos, but yesterday’s was my favorite.
I guess that is part of his charm. From peaceful scenery to posed people to appliances.

The schools must have had a robust instrumental music program to turn out so many adult instrumentalists. Nothing quite as fun as a marching band. I always appreciate that a brief performance was preceded by much practice and coordination by a lot of people.
