Historic Hood River
“Main Street” White Salmon
9-13-2012

Notes
I haven’t shown many pictures of our neighbors in White Salmon, so here’s a start. This is a period post card. Unfortunately we don’t have a year, but maybe someone who knows key dates for White Salmon architecture can narrow it down.

That intersection is certainly not as busy as it is today.
I think this is probably Jewett St and not Main St.
I am curious what the building on the right is. It is similar to one that now sits farther west.
And then behind the tree on the right you can see a large white building.
That one might be a clue for time era.

I think the big building on the right behind the tree is the Colburn Hotel.

I grew up in Hood River, and I always thought it interesting that of the nearby towns, I had been to The Dalles many, many times, but I only went to the much closer White Salmon 5 times.

Maybe it was because we had to pay bridge toll. I don’t recall going there, other than to cross to go up and hike around Mt. Adams area, and to pick those wonderful huckleberries….

I’m going to say 1910. No pavement, all the tracks in the mud are skinny carriage wheels or model-T wheels

Probably a good guess AndrewB. Keth McCoy’s book has a 1906 photo of White Salmon. The brick store on the right is not in the photo.
I think the store on the right is the C.M. Wolford store.
At the far end of the street is the Gillett Bank.

A 1905 description of C.M. Woldord’s store in White Salmon.

The photographer is standing in the middle of Jewett Street looking west. The home on the left is most likely the Artemus Ward home with the Zumwalt Building to the west. The brick building on the north side of Jewett is the Wolfard store build 1907. In 1916 it became Sorter’s garage and in 1930 became Gladdens Ford Garage. The road between the Wolford Store and the Colburn Hotel (behind the trees) was Missouri Avenue when this picture was taken, but was changed to Estes Ave. prior to 1929. There is a sign this side of the tree on the left that says, Wards Restaurant
