There’s something remarkably evocative about this image for me. It instantly brings to mind the taste of watery “bug juice” in a tin cup, baked beans with a little extra grit, sopped up with white bread. Of course the pup tents fell down every night when someone tripped over a line. The utensils in the pocket are a nice touch.

A wonderful photo of showing boys, probably scouts (from the hat) experiencing the wonders of the great out of doors. I see the two pretty large old tents so think it was probably a scout troop. Love the boys knickers and quite sturdy boots for tramping around. Wonder where the marshmallows are, always a camping must. Yes, I have fallen over a few tent stakes in my life…….

Brings back memories of Harvey Cardwell’s Explorer Scout troop and Dick Jones and Dennis Paddock packing up the Eagle Creek trail cans of Dinty Moore stew as the rest of us including Bill Seaton "roughed" it….didn’t make much "rank" but all had a good time.
Is there any other place to put your utensils???

I MUST comment on the Eagle Creek episode. My husband was Dick Jones. His very best friend was Dennis Paddock and yes, they hauled up cans of food. I have heard the entire story many times. Ofcourse in his defense, until coming to Hood River, Dick had always lived in cities and had never experienced the great out of doors, which he learned to love while in Hood River and spent the rest of his life out camping and fishing……

I remember that hike very well. Just before we started to hike up the trail, we weighed all of the backpacks. The one Dick was carrying weighed 55 pounds, and Dennis’ weighed 70 pounds. All of the rest of the backpacks weighed in around 30 pounds.

All I can do is shake my head over this one. Bill, were you on the climb of Mt. Hood with them when Cardwell went down the mountain and they thought he was dead?
