Historic Hood River
Longview, Washington
3-20-2020

Notes
Olga didn’t record where they spent the day of August 18, 1924, but by the 19th they had left Southern Oregon in the dust and were all the way up in Longview, Washington. Their trusty automobile doesn’t look too beaten up by the trip.
The Hotel Monticello is now the Monticello Hotel and the trees have grown so much it’s hard to see across the park, but otherwise it looks unchanged.

The “planned city” with the hub configuration I find confusing (confusion should be my middle name)

Yes, the city where you drive around and around trying to get out of there.
The hotel opened in 1923 so it would have been brand new when the Plogg group visited. Lake Sacajawea Park may not have been in existence yet, since the Lake is man made but it would have helped beautify the area around the hotel.

good to have company being confused in Longview…but I like the town, like the steam loco in the park, like the squirrel road crossings and downtown. Roger and I have some of the metal boxes that grandfather Purl Sheribon had on/in his car for car trips such as this…all with painted labels so “stuff” was easy to find. the one I have is labeled “flour” and is hand painted.
hard to imagine Kenn the explorer getting confused “in town”.

I expected Arlen to like Longview with its great logging RR history. There was once a branch of the mainline through Longview with its own depot.
The city also has a very nice restored theater worth a visit.

I am curious if the Ploggs will travel Highway 12 to Yakima Valley or will they visit Mt Rainier?
Kenn
Wish she had gone a bit farther south to the Siskiyou where there have been four crossings. The first stage road is remote but the second or Pacific highway is still visible above the still drivable 99 and below that I-5, The Ploggs would have been on the second road, the highest at 4000'
