This is a view of the 1920 Columbia River Highway bridge across the Hood River shortly before it was demolished. You can see some of the concrete is in very poor condition, but other parts look like new. Concrete in 1920 was very inconsistent, which provides a challenge in restoring these structures. ODOT recently completed very nice renovations on several historic Columbia River Highway bridges between Hood River and the Dalles. They put some fancy technology to work. I wonder what decision we would make about this bridge if it were still around and we had modern technology available for restoration.

This is a good photo to show just how sharp the corner was on the north end of the bridge. The south end wasn't much better. You could not have been able to get the size fruit trucks we have now to even make the corner.
It would take a lot of restoration to get it fixed properly and there again would be the issue of size of trucks.

It was definitely “functionally obsolete” by the 1960s because of those tight turns.
