The original Hood River Hospital really was an attractive building. I think the photographer did a good job with this shot on a snowy, icy night. I suspect he had to use his tripod to walk.

I remember winters like that in Hood River growing up. A foot or so of snow then the freezing rain on top of it. Sometimes it would get so thick you could walk right on top of the stuff. Remember spending nine days in room 106 in that hospital in 1971.

Any idea what month this is?
The HR Glacier and the Mt Adams Sun do not have 1958 online, so I went to the Goldendale Sentinel.
On January 2, they comment on the Iris blooming. I didn’t find anything in Dec.
Maybe it was February. I will keep reading.

Beautiful shot, those conditions are scary for walking and driving, I remember as a youth sledding in such conditions. Fast and looking back, dangerous. We never thought about helmets then?!

That was the winter a group of us went sledding down Rand Road coming out on the highway below. Really dumb looking back.

Happy Birthday, Bill! I know one of your old buddies, Fred Markham, is thinking of you and those winters in Hood River also. Isn’t our new hospital wonderful!!! Living near Rand Road, they still try that sledding bit if there are no barriers set up.

I, too spent many days/weeks in that hospital around that same time. It wasn’t pretty. I do notice that winters have become much more mild all over Oregon than what we grew up with..

7th Street is still a popular place for sledding/ skiing/ snowboarding when we get a good dump. Jackson Park works better for the younger set.

Yes Happy Birthday Bill. While not a cold memory, as a teen I worked some at the hospital as a janitor assistant…..some unpleasant memories with the trash burner but some pleasant time in the summer on the roof of this building re-painting hospital beds. I will never forget the difficulty of stripping and waxing floors that were used 24/7….all nice people to work with. While I don’t remember my birth here, I sure do remember getting my tonsils removed and all that damn jello…..

Sledding. I recall people who lived in town saying they used to sled on a hill right in town. What was it called…………
Now we used to sled up Fir Mountain Road……..if you made the corners you could go for a couple of miles………..looking back I wonder why none of us were seriously injured. We would take cars up there and sled down in front of them using the head lights to attempt to show the way…….We were in our late teens and early 20’s when this went on and our parents would have had heart attacks if they knew this was going on, believe me……
Weren’t we all born in the old Hood River hospital……

My mom was born in this very building in 1941 and I worked in the dietary department from April 1st 1993 to dec 1998. I miss working there with all my friends.

I was born in Hood River in 1949. We lived in Lyle Oregon and Mom crossed the Columbia River on a ferry when I was born. I have been looking for a picture of the hospital with no luck until now. I am assuming the hospital isn’t there any longer. Thank you so much!

I was born in this hospital on Jan. 23rd 1958 – this past year I had to get a copy of my birth certificate, it cost me $ 75.00 – WOW and OUCH ! No kiss on my wallet made me feel better.
