Those grandstands look brand new. They must have taken their football seriously. This is an Alan Winans photo of Wyeast High School, 1952.

Football was VERY serious. I think Buzz will agree…. My take on this beings it is a day game is that it might be junior varsity, as I assure you if it were varsity on any given day or night those seats would have been full. Later there were sets of bleachers built on both ends of that stadium. KIHR broadcast the games from up above there.
The Hood River County Fair was held at Wy’east and that area under the stadium was where the livestock was housed, meaning pigs and cows. I remember the time during fair that John Furrow’s old sow had 14 piglets one night. They had piglets loose running all over the place. It was like a rodeo everyone attempting to corral them.
That little building on wheels was the portable popcorn, candy, etc. known as "The Pop Corn Kids", Darrell and Ella. They both had Downs, but I always admired them for their hard work, providing for themselves and I think they had two children. They never missed a game and on Saturday you could find them parked in front of Penney’s. I wonder how many bags of pop corn I bought out of that place.

I believe that Darrell and Ella Mae Nichols both had cerebral palsy, not Downs syndrome. They lived down the street from us on Taylor Street and my dad handled their legal affairs. They were entirely competent mentally and raised two children. Sadly, Darrell and the son Wayne were killed in an automobile accident in 1966. Ella Mae died in 2010 and their surviving daughter, Donna, died last year.

My pea brain is remembering a bit about uncle Joe Sheirbon, whose property was immediately west of these stands, selling or donating property to the HR County School District for this building.
And good memories of the folk running the popcorn stand….they were fixtures of HR.

Great memories of rivalry between Wy’east and HRHS. Had good friends in both schools. Enjoyed hearing about Darrell and Ella Mae and how they were a productive and integral part of their community.
