Historic Hood River
Fyer-Fyters
7-19-2022

Notes
I’m not sure if the volunteers are learning how to use fire extinguishers or if the station is hosting a fire extinguisher inspection/recharge session, but they seem to be enjoying themselves. Most of the extinguishers are “Fyer-Fyter” brand. You can read a lengthy history of the brand here.
The double bay garage doors tell me this was probably taken at the fire department building up on Wilson Street, rather than the main station downtown.

Arthur, this photo would be a good on to run past Bill Pattison.

I think I spy a classic 50’s Stanley green metal thermos at left, next to the guy’s boot. I have one just like it.

Nope, that’s a piece of fire equipment. It has a valve handle on the top.

Did they have an adapted refrigerator in the fire house to encourage attendance and happiness? that’s a very good turnout for just a fire extinguisher show and tell.

Is that an old fashioned telephone in front of the cigar smoking talker? Does not seem to jibe with the apparent era.
ArthurB
I checked with the HRFD Chief about the phone. He has a similar phone which we know was in service at the downtown station long after it was an antique. They were both signed "This Telephone For Fire Use Only." Perhaps it was a direct line for dispatch purposes?
I wonder if this phone is still on the wall? That building is now used for storage.

I would like to see some ID of the guys. They are all so young & handsome. ðŸ‘

Arthur, that old fire station on Wilson St. is not just for storage anymore. Our HRV school district has repurposed it for a classroom. It’s called the ‘community works project’ for the district, under the leadership of Pete Lawson. There are various ‘hands on’ stations there, from a skateboard press, to carpentry, to lapidary, to stained glass, to yard work and gardening, just lots going on in there. It’s really cool, I’ve helped Pete out many times as a certified sub. Last trimester they have nearly finished a ‘Tiny Home’, on a robust trailer. Once completed they will market it, and put the money back into the program. Peek in the big glass doors sometime, you will see many tools, and the Tiny home on its trailer………..,A great program, I believe…..!
ArthurB
Thanks for the update James, sounds like a great program. But is the phone still there???
James
No phone, I think…..? I’ll double check that next time there!
