Historic Hood River
Floodplain
5-9-2023

Notes
This December 1937 image shows the substantial reroute to the Hood River White Salmon Bridge which was needed to move the northern approach ramp out of the soon-to-be-flooded parts of the Bonneville Pool. The original 1924 bridge bent to the west and split into two ramps which landed roughly where the park-and-ride is today. The new approach added a bunch of additional piers we can see in this image. You can just make out work on the new lift span. All of the land you see here is now under water year-round.

Thanks, Arthur. I had never heard about this change in the northern approach to bridge. Is there any record of date this approach actually opened?

Are those sand dunes?

I was just reading in the White May 6, 1938 newspaper about the Bonneville Lake waters rising. It talks about the Bridge approach.

I think for many, it was devastating to watch their land disappear.
