Historic Hood River
Field Trip
3-18-2022

Notes
These gentlemen from the Hood River Chamber of Commerce are on a field trip to view logging operations up near Dee circa 1925. We previously saw their train ride up there as well as a view of the operation. This is more of a photo op. I notice most of the men are wearing logging boots. In the high resolution scan I can make out the spikes on the soles.
I recognize Leslie Butler, president of the Butler Bank.

Whata is the wood burner for? And what is that white thing in the near background? Is that an Alpinee jacket on the gentleman on the left?
nels
One of those previous photos mentions that an engine rolled up around Lolo Pass. Has that been mentioned at anytime as to location? I can't imagine salvaging such a large engine but have not heard mention of it.

I am no old-time logging expert, but I was thinking the wood burner is associated with a steam donkey that is being used to pull logs off the hill. Or possibly a log splitter or saw? That is kind of what the machinery looks like behind the crowd, but really can't tell for sure. You look in the foreground and you see pieces of what appear to be cut boards, so maybe they are sawing.

Click on the “view of the operation” as listed by Arthur. It shows it in operation from a different angle.

Thanks nels……in the prior picture there are actually two steam donkeys used for yarding, which is what I suspected the operation was all about. It is not clear to me whether the setup we see in the picture above is one of the two seen in the other picture, there may have been several in the area. Yes, one should always check the related past postings to avoid proving one's ignorance.

Now kmb find out where that locomotive is that took a dive somewhere on Lolo Pass.

p.s. kmb “ignorance” in Latin means 'to not know'. That's a definition for just
about all of us on just about everything,
