Historic Hood River
Don’t Smile!
3-17-2022

Notes
Based on the drum sticks on several of the plates I thought this was Thanksgiving dinner at one of Alva and Io Day’s relatives, but it is dated April 27, 1952. I’m not sure why no one is smiling, but it looks like they did a good job eating everything on the table. All that appears to be left are the obligatory plates with stacks of sliced bread (one white, one wheat is my guess). It’s funny we have so many dinner pictures taken at the end of the meal. I’ve always found the photos at the beginning of the meal when everybody is still hungry and alert look better.

Thought perhaps Easter dinner, but that would've been April 13. It was a Sunday.

Maybe after a funeral?

He had to move some of them, shift them around so everyone's face could be seen. And then he had to ask them all to sit still for a moment. So they're probably mildly annoyed at the interruption.

I didn’t find any April family birthdays.

I think Beth may have been on it. All the solemn faces and especially the young
girl in the foreground. Childrens faces always say a lot about what is going on in
their souls. She's looking elsewhere as if deep thoughts. Everybody else is
looking at the photographer.
