Historic Hood River
Familiar Rocks?
1-31-2022

Notes
Recognize those rocks? I think they are the ones just west of the northern landing of the Hood River White Salmon Interstate Bridge. You can see Stanley Rock/ Koberg Beach in the background. This is circa 1912, about a decade before construction began on the bridge.

I first thought these might be the islands east of the bridge but I used google street view to line up the images and you have to be too far out on the bridge for that to work. I think Arthur is right that these are west of the bridge. Could this image be taken from the ferry dock at the base of Dock Grade and is that a small boat and barge at the point.

I am curious about the white post. Are they tree protectors, fence post or what?

Like you Basaltgrouse, my first impression was east of the existing bridge.
It seems like the Bonneville pool would have covered these rocks. Maybe the photo was taken at high water?
The railroad would be new. (1908), so I wonder if the white posts have something to do with a railroad crossing.
This doesn’t look like any of the photos of the WS ferry dock. I wonder if this is a private landing.

Now you’ve got me staring at the white posts. They seem to surround a small square plot of land, and there’s a taller post with what looks like a sign attached to it.
I can see the in-lieu fishing site from where I am sitting, and the shape of the point matches it well. Less of the rocks are visible now as the water is higher.
Basaltgrouse
I am pretty confident that there is a small boat and barge with a gin pole structure on it. Also while zooming in again to look at what appears to be the boat and barge, I noticed what looks to be some type of structure on the mound of rocks on the point.

Does this aerial view show the rocks?

1915 view of the WS Dock. More rocky than today’s photo and not the Cottonwood trees.

Basaltgrouse
https://www.hoodriverhistorymuseum.org?showimage=2530 confirms that this was taken from the area of the ferry dock at the base of Dock Grade road. The island on the right side of the image is visible in both images and is nearly the same alignment.
