Notes
This is Edith Sproat Vannet feeding chickens, as seen in a Sproat family photo album. She grew up in Hood River, went to Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State). Edith Sproat married Ed Vannet in 1921 as noted in this article.
I suspect chickens were a staple at every orchard in the valley.

C. H. Sproat is Stricken Suddenly
C. H. Sproat, pioneer orchardist of the East Side, where in 1910 his tracts produced the world champion car of Newtowns, shown at the Spokane apple show, died suddenly Wednesday morning. His death came as a shock to family and friends. Tuesday night Mr. Sproat joined neighbors in a surprise birthday party for Hans Lage, pioneer orchardist.
Mr. Sproat, aged 68, was a native of Wisconsin. He came to the valley with his family in 1900. For many years he was manager of the Hood River Apple Growers’ Union, the Northwest’s original growers’ cooperative marketing machine. Later he established the National Apple Co., the property of which afterward was taken over by the Apple Growers Association.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at Asbury Methodist church with Masonic rites. Rev. W. N. Byars will officiate. Interment will follow at Idlewilde cemetery.
Mr. Sproat is survived by his wife and the following daughters: Mrs. R. W. Skibbe and Mrs. E. A. Vannet, of Hood River, and Mrs. H. C. Henkle, of Portland. Mrs. F. G. Church, a sister, also survives. C. C. Anderson will direct the funeral.

A favorite memory of this HRHS class of 59 member is Ed’s sex education curriculum and his blue dot white socks. Our 64th reunion is this September. On our agenda is a visit to this organization with a focus on what the Museum wants from us. Sadly, one of our three planners up and died, RIP Norma Jubitz Simpson.
