Historic Hood River
Circumnavigation

Notes
The inset article from the Hood River News tells most of the story. This image from Cloud Cap Inn shows Waldo Arens, Hans Hoerlein, Bill Marshal, Paul Hoerlein and Ned Crawford at some point on their circumnavigation of Mt. Hood in the summer of 1916.
A couple of years ago Ned Marshal told me his Dad (Bill Marshal) had named him after his best friend, Ned Crawford. Just two years after this trip Ned Crawford would earn a Distinguished Service Cross for his service in the American Expeditionary Force in World War I.

Historically very cool, I presume this time of 1916 is pre-plaid shirt for us Rats. Anyone know when that tradition started?

I am trying to figure out the pack with the long pole?
Gosh, people used to be tough.

Crag Rats were incorporated in 1926. My recollection is the plaid shirts came roughly the same time.
Maybe the long pole and pack is part of a tent?

Betting long pole and wrap is main stay for a large tent- we had one for decades in the top of our garage that was really old and heavy. Was used on occasions for week long hunting trips. Guessing the guys took this one in turns, two at a time, packing it around the mountain.

Thanks Hukari. I thought it looked like two people had to pack it.
