Historic Hood River
Cascade Locks Modifications
9-24-2020

Notes
This construction view of the Cascade Locks is dated May 28, 1914. I’m not sure if they are repairing the walls of the canal after a flood or making modifications to the original construction, but it’s a good clear view of the site.

I found this in the July 30, 1914 Oregonian P. 14.
"….In the First Oregon district expenditures for the fiscal year reached the grand total of $1,106,397.19. The largest single item being on The Dalles -Celilo Canal,…..For the operation of the locks and canal at the Cascades, $14,652.08 was spent and constructing a south wall there $66,749.76…."
"….The south wall at the Cascade Locks, which was left uncompleted at the time the canal and locks were built, was 93 per cent finished last year and the time of locking a vessel through has been decreased from 18 minutes to nine minutes….."

Thanks LE, mystery solved.

Are the images available on this website in full resolution (or highER resolution)?

If you count the number of concrete(?) boulders on the left and then on the right that are above water, you can see they are evidently adding one more rise to the sides.

TD, I plan to redesign the website one day to let me share higher resolution images. The design is >10 years old so it needs a little work.

The close up of that gate, makes me think "Rosie the Riveter".

Do we know who actually took this photo. I think it might be a Fred Diemer photo, not saying that it is though. We had one earlier taken by him of the Cascade Locks in 1914. He was my great-uncle.

Charlott, I managed to find the older Fred Diemer photo: https://www.hoodriverhistorymuseum.org?showimage=884
I can’t be sure which ones were taken by Fred Diemer, but it looks like many of the old Cascade Locks photos were donated by Virginia Gorton Gray Lee in the 1960s, if I am following the notes correctly. Is she a relation?
