Historic Hood River
“Billy and Marguerite”
9-25-2020

Notes
This image of “Billy and Marguerite” is from the DeWitt collection, and dates circa 1920. We previously determined Billy and Marguerite to be Harry and Pansy DeWitt’s niece and nephew. The photo was taken on the corner of 3rd and Cascade. It appears to be an updating of this image. This corner was the location of Harry DeWitt’s “Ford Garage”.

Billy and Marguerite were in fact Pansy’s nephew and niece. Billy was William Harding Baker born in Hood River in 1919 and Marguerite was also born in Hood River in 1917. They were the children of Pansy’s brother William and his wife, Mary Ellen (Dabney) Baker. Billy died in 1985 and Marguerite in 1973. She married a man with the last name of Cheney or Cheny.

Is that a gas pump back there across the street?

Big sisters love to be possessive of their little brothers. And bossy. Marguerite’s pose is so typical. I will smile for the camera and here is my little brother.
This has probably been discussed here before, but I assume the Columbia Center for the Arts building is a remodeled DeWitt’s Garage?

I knew Pam Cheney who graduated from HRHS in 1965. She might be related to Marguerite.

Yes, LE, the DeWitt garage became the VFW and then the Columbia Center For the Arts (after a major remodel).
And yes, that is a gas pump across the street. That was the Hood River Garage, which we saw in an earlier post (inside).

I think it was the American Legion Hall and not the VFW.
Nellie
American Legion is correct.
