Historic Hood River
Building Boom
9-21-2021

Notes
In 2005 there was something of a building boom in downtown Hood River. This building at 310 Oak was under construction, as was the New Yasui Building and the building lining the condos or townhouses south of the Columbia Cascade parking lot. The first floor of this building is now home to Doppio Coffee and Plenty women’s clothing.

Anyone know what the elevation change is from 13th St. to 1st St along Oak?
JKG
1at @ Oak is approximately 140' and 13th @ Oak is 296' (for a 156' change).

Are you planning a ski trail?
Bill Seaton
Whenever I see that part of the block, my mind always reminds me that is where the Cascadian Theater and Shelton's Passtime used to be.

Thanks JKG.
The street would make a good ski trail. The reason I asked is because the slope in the old photos is so noticeable. Of course, the north/south slope is even more impressive.

Some of the early ordinances specify the elevations of the north and south curbs at each intersection along the main streets. It's surprising how much higher the south curb was than the north curb- a couple of feet. They had to specify all those elevated sidewalks too. The urban renewal shortly after this photo date replaced all those streets and sidewalks we're looking at. I think the curb/gutter/sidewalk profile if much more uniform today.

Just to make sure everything is covered – Chemistry Jewelry Gallery occupies the western-most retail space in that new building – Suite 103!!!

Thanks TK, I'll add a tag for Chemistry Jewelry Gallery.

301 Oak was designed by Holst Architecture, a woman owned firm in Portland. The new Yasui Building was designed by local architect Carl Perron who died in 2013.
