Historic Hood River
Bridge Out
12-17-2021

Notes
We know this spot well– this is where the pipeline carrying water diverted at the Powerdale Dam crosses the Hood River on its way down to the hydroelectric generator. It looks as if the floodwaters have lifted the bridge off its foundations and carried it a ways downstream. I suspect it took some time before they could restore power generation.

Wow, what a flood…..! What date may this have been? I don't think I've ever seen the Hood so High….! It must also be lapping at the railway bridge down stream a bit.

I was just looking for some history news about the 1964 Christmas Flood. I can't find anything about the Hood River. I would think it would have been a raging torrent like this photo. Rufus, Biggs, John Day River, White River all make the news.

I'm having a hard time imaging where the photographer was standing unless there is easyish access to the island just south of the crossing. I think the west bank angles in too far, but I may be mistaken.

I have been on that island but access wasn't easy even at normal water level. I think the river bank curves back around as the railroad tracks climb affording this view as long as there isn't a train coming.

Does Indian Creek come in, around that point?
ArthurB
Indian Creek is about half a mile downstream from here.

This photo is taken from the railroad tracks on the East bank about where the river makes a sharp left turn above the crossing.
