Historic Hood River
DeWitt Ford Garage
12-16-2021

Notes
This has a little motion blur (a common issue with the Ella May Davidson photos) but it looks like Charles Davidson is getting ready to cross Cascade Avenue to the Davidson Fruit Company building. Harry DeWitt’s Ford garage (215 Cascade Ave, now the Columbia Center For the Arts) looks brand new, dating this circa 1918. We have a good view of the Hotel Oregon, and the cupola of the Mt. Hood Hotel is just visible in the background.
When Matt and I were scanning this collection I promised if I got a chance to go back in time I would give Ella May a tripod so her photos would be sharp and square to the frame.

Do we know what the little business is across the street. I think today, that would be Pietros parking lot.

There are several interesting roof tops beyond building LE mentions. Any idea what they are?

Thanks for reminder about Tilly Jane program, Norma. Does anyone else remember camping up there the night before the Legion climb, lining up for dinner cooked in the hut that is still there and the great entertainment provided in the amphitheater? I particularly remember an evening's performance by the recently arrived Fraunfelder family whose musical talents included yodeling. This was the perfect setting for such a program….and then the fireworks from the mountain.

When I first opened the photo, I thought the gentleman was E.L. Smith

At the time of this image there was a one story laundry business on the corner of 2nd and Cascade, and a two story rooming house a little beyond on Cascade before the Mt. Hood Hotel.

The program Norma is describing is a 2019 Oregon Field Guide episode which you can stream here: https://www.pbs.org/video/season-30-episode-9-6gmgyj/

Now back to Historic H/R.

cg Do have any more info about the Fraunfelder performance you mention? I'm directing Cemetery Tales again this year and their family is a part of it, as is Harry DeWitt, hence the reason I'm on this photo.
