Balsam Root is high in protein so it provides much needed nutrients to wildlife and grazing animals after a long winter.

Definitely taken high up above The Old Dalles Road. Just looking at this photo reminds me what a labor it was for my family and others to get up and down that road to their homesteads with their horses and wagons.

From the time I can remember locals always said “don't plant your garden until the snow is off Defiance.” That always seemed to be true…..
That is true about not being a short trip to The Dalles. Stop and think for those that homesteaded up on top it was not a quick trip to Hood
River. Keep in mind that coming home was all uphill. I recall my grandpa saying that once he came to H. R. at 11 and went up that mountain to live he didn't get to go down to town for a long time. He did climb that hill (mountain) morning and night to go to the “board and batten” school in Pine Grove. I think if it was snowing there was no school, as it would have been a chore for most students to get there, especially those that had to come down. That is why later places like Rose Hill school was built.
