Notes

I had a request for a photo of August Guignard so I thought I would share it. August Guignard invented a fruit washer which he manufactured under the Ideal Fruit Grade and Nursery label. We saw his invention in this earlier post.

August Guignard 's parents both came to the U. S. from Switzerland. He was married to Mary Maire, who also came to the U. S. fron Switzerland. They had two children, John and Laura, who later became Mrs. August Bosse.

At one time he even had a nursery, presumably trees.

He was very inventive having three patents to his credit.

    Fruit Grader in 1919
    Tractor Safety Device in 1921
Sterilizer and Fruit Washing Machine in 1929

All of his inventions would naturally help the orchard owners in Hood River.

Ah-ha, now I know the background of that road name, Guignard. Right, the road to the dump, with PP&L out front on 12th. Sure wish they would have named it something easy like August Dr. Guignard has always been such a 'mouth-ful', but now knowing the background, Swiss-German, it makes more sense.!

In this day & age road & street names in Hood River County are crazy and as for future generations remembering , forget it. Builders name the streets/roads after their kids. Lucy, Rebecca, Max etc.

    What is the correct pronunciation?

Good question Herman. I've gone with a hard G as in “gift”: Geen-yard.

Most I have heard is hard g but gin yerd (emphasis on first syllable)
