Historic Hood River
Agricultural Implements
9-8-2022

Notes
This great old tractor is pulling a wagon. I don’t know the location, but there were several agricultural implement shops north of Cascade Avenue. WAAAM has a nice early steam powered tractor, but this appears to be a very early gasoline powered machine.
The Lambert Gas and Gasoline Engine Co. has a distinguished history, including the first American gasoline automobile in 1891.

It appears that Oliver plows also originated in Indiana.
Arthur, can you read the signage on the building in the background?

And somewhere, a long time ago, there was a farmer who bought this tractor new, and thought he was modern.
I am sure it is not, but it looks like a whip standing up from the basket. I wonder if it made the tractor pull harder when it was stuck.

I can't read much of the sign on the building in the background, though it might say “Cafe”.
As for the “modern” tractor, there is a quote from E.L. Doctorow: “That we live in modern times is the necessary illusion of every age.” I am sure people will laugh at our primitive technology too.

Does anyone else think that rear 'tire' looks strange? Looks as if they are singles and rise separately according to their attachment to the axle. Like could be used in serious mud. Or am I seeing that wrong?
ArthurB
Definitely odd tires. They look like a hybrid between a track and a wheel. I've never seen one like it.
