There’s not a lot to go on, but can anyone identify this town? There’s circumstantial evidence these are Hood River locals out for a Sunday drive, circa 1920. In any case, it’s a great portrait.

Wonder if this might be Pendleton and the round up? Know it would have been a long drive if that is where it might be and these are Hood Riverites. If you notice the younger ones have sort of cowboys hats on and the one does have somewhat of a "cowboy" scarf….just sort of look like they might be "duded" out for a rodeo. I wonder if the youngest one was the driver, because of his keys hooked to his belt loop.. Dad, if that is Dad looks like he has a camera case around him and probably Mom took the photo.

Charlott got to it first. I agree with her. They are in Pendleton because the boy on the right is wearing one of the "give away" silk scarves. I collect them, and recognized it right away. i bet it is bright red on white.And the Dudes always wear their hats when at Round Up. Let ‘er buck!

I believe the picture was taken in Goldendale. From the 1934 Klickitat County News:
"Col. E.B. Wise owned the store on the southwest corner of Main Street and Columbus avenue. His residence was just south of the courthouse where is now located the residence of merchant H.W. Bates and wife. When the writer took charge of The Sentinel in 1893 Crohn & Waters have a general mercantile store in this building. When the Farmers Mercantile Co. went out of business, S. Waters leased to the lower floor of the brick building now owned by W.H. Ward and conducted a mercantile and grocery store. The sign, "S. Waters & Co.," – painted on the front of the building, is still there."

I agree Jim. I just didn’t find as much proof as you did.
Pendleton was a great guess, but I had found an S. Waters in Yakima who had moved to Goldendale.

Yes, agreed on Pendleton. The building in the photo actually has a passing resemblance to the Hamleys building (but on closer inspection it wasn’t the same)(and Hamleys was in the building before the 20s). Will certainly look for this building next time I am in Goldendale. Wonder if it is still there?

I don’t think it is still there Jim. If it is on the southwest corner of Columbus and main it would be the shorter, gray building in the background of this photo.

I received this reply from the Klickitat County Historical Society:
"The Waters store was on the corner of Columbus and Main in Goldendale. It was built in around 1913 had several similar names and was torn down in the mid 40’s to make way for a Richfield gas station and a JC Penny store."
I am thinking the building on the left might still be there. The next time I go to Goldendale I will check. That might help confirm where the photo was taken.

In November, the Goldendale Sentinel came out with a history supplement inside the newspaper.
A photo of this S. WATERS & CO. store front is featured on page 3.
The caption states: " DRY GOODS AND NEWSPAPERS: Constructed in 1888, this building housed a dry goods store— and The Sentinel, which moved into the east end in 1893."
