Historic Hood River
M.F. Shaw Residence

Notes
This house was built about 1901 for Dr. and Mrs. M.F. Shaw. Today’s puzzle is in two parts:
- 1) Where is it?
- 2) How many of its residents can you list?
I know several HHR readers have seen this house up close and personal.

I think this might be what I know as the Dr. Dumble house, looks very similiar. If it is it is just above the Lutheran Church on the opposite side of the street.
Love the woman and her cape. Is that Mrs. Shaw?

Just came back from town and yes, it is Dr. Dumble’s house.
As to who all has lived in that house all I know of are the Shaw’s and the Dumble’s. No doubt Shaw sold it to Dumble

Dr. Dumble was a very promient man in Hood River. He naturally had his medical practice, but also served as the Hood River Mayor from 1915-1919. He also had a large orchard south of H. R. He grew up in Marion, Ohio and went to Ohio Wesleyan University and got his medical training in the National University in Washington D. C. Served as the medical examiner for the Dept. of the Interior for a number of years. Upon a visit to H. R., he fell in love and resigned and immediately moved here.

Charlott’s got the right house, at 9th and Sherman. You may remember this post: https://www.hoodriverhistorymuseum.org?showimage=131, which was right in front of this house. I know some of you can provide a more recent history of this house. Anyone know who carved the bear???

Lookes like the dog might be a biter type. What a beautiful view of the river from there. Hard to believe it was what you might call in the country….

Doesn’t have the same grade as it does today. In the old photo it looks to be sloping in the wrong direction.

Dan, I know what you mean about the slope. I can’t figure out where the photographer was standing because the area has been regraded quite a bit.

I’m not sure who lived there when I was growing up. We always called it the Old Maid’s house.

The 1973 telephone book shows William C. Rowland living at 318 9th Street.

Would be interesting to find out who the Old Maid was that resided there. Does anyone know?

I think you may be on the wrong side of ninth–the address is on the heights?

I think that address is right. Street numbers start at Columbia, up 100 every block south. Even numbers on the west side of the street. This looks like it: http://goo.gl/maps/efAl2

The bear was carved when Ken Maddox owned the house and I think he still lives there.

I drove by this house today. Hard to visualize it sitting on the hill all by itself. There must have been a tremendous amount of hillside removed from where the park now sits across the street.
I am curious if a creek ran down that gully.

Marion was my Great Great Grand Uncle. His wife, Elizabeth (Wood) is in the picture with their dog, Buster. My records say that a "Mrs. Shafer" owned the home in 1955.

It is located on 9th street and I Lived in this house when I first moved to Hood River. My parents owned it for around 4 years and my bedroom was the tower. I loved this house. Linda Palmer Gray
